Orthodontics

At Gwynne Dental, we understand the importance of early orthodontic assessment for children. As standard, our clinicians monitor the alignment of the teeth, jaw development and bite at each routine check up to help identify any issues as early as possible. We believe in taking a proactive approach to address orthodontic concerns in children, as early intervention can help guide the growth of the teeth and jaws, ultimately leading to a healthy, confident smile in the future.

Orthodontic treatment is assessed on a case-by-case basis and treatment can range from extractions and fixed braces to changing tooth position with clear aligners. For those with more severe concerns, we may consider referral to a specialist orthodontist for treatment. Other cases can be treated in house with clear aligners, such as Spark Clear Aligners.

Clear aligners are a popular, non-invasive alternative to traditional metal braces for straightening teeth. They are a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over your teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position over time.

The process begins with a consultation with Dr Xenia Bolger who will assess your teeth and create a treatment plan. Scans will be taken of your teeth and will be used to create a 3D model of your teeth in their current position. A digital mock-up is then created of the desired end result. This is used to create a series of custom-made aligners that will gradually move your teeth into the desired position.

Each aligner is worn for a specific period of time, usually around one week, before being replaced with the next aligner in the series. They are designed to be worn for around 22 hours a day, only being removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

The benefits of clear aligners include:

  • Discreet and barely noticeable

  • Comfortable and non-invasive

  • Removable for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing

  • Effective for correcting a variety of dental issues, including overcrowding, gaps, and misaligned teeth

Clear aligners are a great option for those looking to straighten their teeth without the hassle and discomfort of traditional metal braces. They are effective, convenient, and tailored to your individual needs and goals.

For children, clear aligners allow for easier maintenance of oral hygiene, as the braces can be taken out, allowing easy teeth cleaning. However, a consideration of this treatment is compliance of the patient. Success depends on wearing the aligners as directed, it is important we assess each child’s ability to complete this type of treatment.
