Ear Health
Gwynne Dental is pleased to announce that we are now able to offer ear syringing services alongside our comprehensive dental care. This new addition allows patients to benefit from professional earwax removal conducted by our trained practitioner Jennifer Miller, in a safe and comfortable setting.
Ear syringing at Gwynne Dental is carried out using modern techniques to ensure effectiveness and minimise discomfort, providing relief for those experiencing blocked ears or hearing difficulties. This service complements our commitment to enhancing patient wellbeing through high-quality, convenient care in Basingstoke and North Hampshire.
Earwax (also known as Cerumen) is a normal, protective substance in the ear canal that consists of dead skin cells, hair and oily secretions from glands. It cleans, lubricates, and protects the ear by trapping dirt and repelling water. Normally, wax dries up and falls out of the ear, however occasionally it blocks the ear canal causing a range of symptoms from hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness to ear or sinus pain.
A common mistake when trying to clear blocked ears is the use of a cotton bud. This will often push the wax towards the ear drum and cause what is known as compaction. Use of micro suction is used to gently remove the wax without causing this compaction depending on your specific need.
Looking after your ear health
What does an appointment involve?
Your appointment will begin with a consultation with our practitioner Jennifer Miller. She will assess the ears to determine what treatment is required.
Depending on assessment, treatment may be recommended for one or both ears. For some patients, only one session may be required. For cases of compaction a few sessions may be needed.
How to Prepare for Your Ear Wax Removal Appointment
To ensure a smooth and effective procedure, we recommend using a wax softening spray for 3 to 5 days before your appointment and our product of choice is Earol and this should be available from your local pharmacy.
During this time, you may experience temporary hearing loss or a blocked sensation, which is completely normal as the wax softens and shifts in the ear canal.
However, if you have been advised against using oil or ear drops by another health professional, or if you have a known or suspected perforation of the eardrum, please refrain from doing so.
